Ward off Climate Change

About the author

Gary Warden was raised in the Perth Hills. After graduating from the University of Western Australia with a degree in Geology, Gary joined BHP Billiton where he spent 18 years working in a variety of roles in a number of locations around the world. Prior to leaving BHP Billiton in December 2006, Gary was Global Manager for the company's US$1Billion business improvement program.

While he was originally sceptical about the claims relating to climate change, he became convinced of the urgency of the issue in early 2006. He left BHP Billiton primarily to spend more time with his young family, but also to dedicate himself to helping to ward off climate change.

In September 2007 he was trained by Al Gore and has delivered the "Inconvenient Truth" lectures to thousands of west australians since then. In November 2007 Gary ran for the senate in the Federal Election representing the Climate Change Coalition.

In addition to his climate change lectures, he is now facilitating Living Smart workshops across Perth and in September 2008 was elected to the Executive Committee of the Conservation Council of WA.

Living Smart

If everyone on the planet lived the same lifestyle as the average Aussie, then we would need four planet Earths for this to be sustainable.

Clearly we all need to do our bit to reduce our ecological footprint. The Living Smart program is aimed at educating the community about how to live more sustainably. Each course aims to:

  • Raise awareness of sustainability issues;
  • Helps participants take up new, more sustainable choices in their lives;
  • Empowers participants to become actively in their communities;
  • Provides participants with an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience.

The Living Smart program was first developed four years ago as a result of a partnership between:

  • The City of Fremantle;
  • The Meeting Place Learning Centre;
  • The Southern Metropolitan Regional Council;
  • Murdoch University.

In the past four years, programs have been run right across the metropolitan area, from Mandurah in the south to Joondalup in the North.

I am now offering a Living Smart course for the first time for residents in the eastern metropolitan area. A Darlington program commenced on Saturday September 13 and is running on Saturday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm for 7 weeks.  A Kalamunda program will be commencing on Tuesday nights from November 11.

Click here to find out more about the Darlington program, including course materials.

Click here to find out more about the Kalamunda program or to register your interest in attending this program.

Visit the Living Smart website to find out more about the general program and to find out what courses are running around Australia.

Click here if you would be interested in attending a course in the eastern metropolitan area (City of Swan, Shire of Mundaring, Shire of Kalamunda, City of Gosnells) that is not currently scheduled. I would run other courses depending on demand.
